New Life!

September 3, 2009

“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” -Romans 6:4 NLT

This past Sunday was incredible! Seven people chose to publicly profess their faith in Christ and be united with him through baptism! It was our first baptism service and what better place to go public than to the Chattahoochee river?

We began with a time of worship down at the river bank, followed by a brief message from pastor Sterling. Then we got to celebrate with those being baptized as pastor Chris interviewed each and one by one they gave a bold confession of faith. Then they entered the water to bury their old lives. It was incredible to witness and then each received prayer and words of encouragement from the Holy Spirit.

Having just had another baby, I got to experience the miracle – the awesome miracle of birth. I’ve seen them, and experienced them, and there is almost no other happening on earth that compares. You don’t even really comprehend why it’s so weighty, so impactful – you are just so awestruck by the beauty of life. Which is rather ironic when you realize that you’re seeing all the pain, the nastiness of delivery, and the actual things God used to grow that life… Not such a pretty site. But even as you’re watching it, you almost don’t notice, because of the sheer magnitude of birth. A new life, a new future that God created – and that this person is different than any other you’ve ever met, and has potential and possibilities that you can only imagine. The world seems amazing and endless and you can’t wait to see the impact they have on it!

And this past weekend, I got to be a part of a similar event again. One that ranks at the very top – being born of Christ and being baptized. I was at church, but church this week took place on the Chatahoochee River, where we baptized seven people. Seven lives changed as they confessed His name – Jesus – the only one who can wash away our sins. And all the things that had been used to grow them, and all their sins, were washed away… It was amazing – each person new – a whole new life ahead of them.

There are so many times that I’m proud to be a Christian, many more that I’m thankful for His grace & that He chose me. And last weekend I was so excited to see each face light up during their “dunking”, and amazed at how God can make all things new. I was thankful to have been a part because it made me see the picture even bigger again. The possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to see the impact these people have on the world!
